PROJECTS - Smith County Appraisal

Smith County Appraisal District
Tyler, TX

The Smith Count Appraisal District was housed in a metal building facility which was showing it's age, had little waiting space for the public, and inadequate office space to meet the needs of the organization. After considering several options for relocation of the facility, a decision was made to build an addition to the existing building.

Mike Barnett, Executive Director of the Appraisal District, wanted a bold, contemporary design with a significant entry point and a spacious waiting area for members of the public who attend board meetings, or come to discuss their property evaluations. As many as 500 people a day come to the facility when evaluations are sent out. As is often the case with a public entity funded by local taxes, the budget for the project was extremely stringent. The challenge was to provide the most attractive up-to-date image, space and functionality for the lowest cost possible.

Berry & Clay completed the 6000 S.F. addition and rennovation to the existing facility. The entry and waiting area features a vaulted ceiling with Glu-lam beams and natural wood decking. The 20' high storefront and clerestory windows along the side of the vaulted entry provide excellent natural lighting. Additional offices feature large windows and are conveniently accessible to the public waiting area.

In the existing facility, restrooms were renovated to meet accessibility standards, and the break room and finishes throughout were updated.

The appraisal district had concern that its existing 10,000 square foot metal building would diminish the value of new construction. Coming up with a design that would be cost effective while enhancing the value of the current facility was a primary concern. The design that, Barham Architects proposed transformed the existing building into an attractive, professional office building at a competitive price. We are pleased with the results and believe it will prove to be a good decision for the taxpayers of Smith County.
